key relationship
CANONIZING ANNIE LEONHARDT and ARMIN ARLERT ( @astutior ): platonic (???) relationship
And my death is not my death, but a pillow beneath my head, a rock propping the window open to admit the jasmine.
- Li-Young Lee, from “Spoken For”
To Annie, who used to watch the world from the stance of a fistfight, interacting with this kid was a practice bout. Slow. Significant. Each time, they would finish having seen through one more feint the other person used, having found out one more weakness the other person hid (or didn’t hide). A circle around each other. A careful dance. A balancing act. And each time, they would walk away knowing that this would not be their last match. Each time. Until all their feints were gone. Until all their weaknesses, they found. Until all the chips were down.
But before then, Annie would enjoy talking to Armin Arlert, enjoy teasing him, enjoy the silence he respected and enjoy the respect he earned from her.
Until their last match.
Whenever that would be.
